Shades of Swing

Like old wine in new bottles, these saxophone quartet arrangements of songs from the Great American Songbook highlight the composers’ exquisite craftsmanship in a form that combines the Jazz idiom with a chamber music-like approach.

Dispensing with the traditional rhythm section and improvised solos that characterize most Jazz recordings, the arrangers found ways to script their unique styles while remaining true to the spirit and the letter of the originals.

From the melancholy mood of Summertime and My Funny Valentine to the all-out swinging character of On Green Dolphin Street and Night and Day, these arrangements demonstrate imaginative styling of familiar tunes – a fitting tribute to the composers and to the many performers who made these pieces a part of America’s musical heritage.
